Championship Doubles Academy
Unlike other programs, we focus primarily on advanced doubles training. Technique, positioning and strategy will be emphasized daily along with a heavy dose of volley, overhead, serve and return practice. If you are looking to make your high school varsity doubles line up, become a state champion or develop your doubles for college, this is the class for you.

Championship Singles Academy
The Singles Academy is designed for experienced high school tennis players and middle schoolers with a UTR Rating. This is an elite, high-performance training for juniors wanting to be at the top of their tennis game. The group will be pushed with advanced drills and strategy aimed for success in singles competition.
Our goal is to develop our singles players to varsity-level players, state champions, and eventual college athletes.

For 35 years, tennis has been a big part of my life. Tennis has given me some great opportunities after making All American at Grand Rapids Community College. I moved to California where I trained and traveled with nationally ranked juniors for 7 years.
Over the last 25 years, I’ve been lucky enough to play and coach in Europe and South America, manage at different tennis clubs, coach at Calvin College, Davenport College and currently at East Grand Rapids high school.
In 2015, I helped create West Michigan Community Tennis, a local nonprofit organization and also started Grand Rapids Tennis Academy. 2024 will be the first year that WMCT and GRTA will work in partnership, and I couldn’t be more excited about it!

I have been coaching high school tennis for 13 years and have enjoyed success on and off the court. My teams have won State Championships and finished in the top 5 at the State Finals several times.
I have been a part of Grand Rapids Tennis Academy for many years and enjoy working with kids from the area. I am certified by the Professional Tennis Registry based in Hilton Head, SC. When not coaching I enjoy reading, golfing, and spending time with my family and friends.
Gunnar Peery / Co-Director

Gunnar is a Metro Detroit native who moved to Grand Rapids in 2013 to study and compete at Aquinas College.
He competed at a high level in high school, capturing the Division 1 State Championship at 2 singles for Brother Rice. While at Aquinas he was a four-year starter on a team that qualified for the NAIA National Tournament twice, including years ranked #10, #13 and #17 in the nation.
Along with his work with West Michigan Community Tennis, Gunnar is the Men’s and Women’s Head Coach at Aquinas College and the Boys Varsity Head Coach at Grand Rapids Christian High School.
Mark Hendrickson / Head Pro

Mark is the East Grand Rapids Assistant Varsity coach for Girls’ & Boys’ Tennis. He holds a UTR (Max) 9 for singles, 8 for doubles, and was ranked #1 in West Michigan USTA Men’s Tournament 4.5 Singles Player 2017 & 2022.
He currently holds two PTR certifications. While teaching, he adapts to their skill level, while educating them on the sport and helping them to enjoy it more. He also tries to improve his clients’ mental strength as he believes it is one of the most crucial skills at a high level.

Kim Gates / Tennis Pro

Qualifications
Kim Gates, a highly decorated tennis player from Grandville, Michigan, has built an impressive career both on and off the court. She was the #1 ranked player in the nation in the 14s and 16s divisions and went on to achieve international success. Today, she channels her passion for the game into a rewarding coaching career, where she is committed to helping others reach their full potential.
Career Highlights
- Ranked #1 nationally in the 14s and 16s divisions
- Captured the USTA National Hard Courts title in the 16s at just 13 years old, earning the prestigious Gold Ball
- Secured a $4 ITF world ranking while competing on the international stage
- Recorded wins over top players, such as Anna Kournikova, Amelie Mauresmo, and Serena Williams
- Competed in elite Grand Slam events, including the Italian Open, US Open, and Junior Grand Slams
Collegiate Achievements
- Earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Texas before transferring to the University of Tennessee
- Named All-SEC at Tennessee and played a pivotal role in leading the team to the 2001 NCAA National Championship final

Anna VanderHyde / Tennis Pro

Qualifications
Anna VanderHyde is a PTR tennis professional with many years of tennis experience. Starting classes at WMCT at age 10, Anna then continued to play #1 singles for the Jenison Wildcats, capturing the OK Red Conference singles championship and all-state honors. Anna now plays collegiate tennis at Holy Cross College, which ranks among the top 10 NAIA teams in the nation.
Anna specializes in player development at all levels to include junior, adult and adaptive tennis, while also ensuring an enjoyable learning environment.
Tim Morey / Tennis Pro

Qualifications
Tim Morey is currently the Men’s and Women’s Assistant Coach at Calvin University, formerly the Head Women’s Coach pre-Covid.
Morey was a walk on for the University of Notre Dame Men’s Tennis team during a time where the team claimed back-to-back Big East Titles and was consistently ranked in the ITA Top 20.
Tim has also served as the Head Boy’s and Girl’s tennis coach at Grand Rapids Christian High School. At GRC, he coached the Girl’s team to six straight top-four team finishes at the Division III state finals including second place finishes in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
On the Boy’s side, he coached the Eagles to four top 5 Division IlI state finishes, including several All-State Players and Flight Champions on both sides every year.
Morey specializes in group drills that include situational tactics, mental toughness, and overall best practices to prepare athletes that want to make the jump to competitive singles and doubles at both the USTA and elite Varsity level.
